  8.                    without  form and  void.  Xmodem  was the  first of the
  9.                    common file  transfer protocols.  Xmodem  transfers the
  10.                    file in  small packets  of 128 bytes  each.  After each
  11.                    packet,  Xmodem  performs a  check to  insure that  the
  12.                    packet  was  transferred correctly.  You can  tell when
  13.                    Xmodem is performing this check if you have an external
  14.                    modem because the lights indicating RD or SD (depending
  15.                    on if you  are sending or  receiving) stop flashing for
  16.                    an instant. That instant  (actually a  substantial part
  17.                    of a second) represents dead time as far as the transfer
  18.                    is concerned because no data is being transferred while
  19.                    Xmodem is performing the packet check.
  20.
